What is the Google Index and How to Get a Website Indexed

google-indexThe term Index, which not only applies to Google but any search engine, such as Yahoo and Bing, is the search engine listings. To be “indexed” means that your site appears somewhere in the index of search engines.

The sites home page maybe indexed, and usually other content pages of the website, referred to as “inner pages” or “sub pages” will get indexed as well.

Contrary to popular belief, not all sites will get indexed, and certainly not all pages of the site will get indexed.

How Long Does it Take to Get Indexed?

The answer to this question depends on several factors. Usually after a site is launched, which means made live on the Internet it can take anywhere from 1 day to some weeks to get a site indexed in Google, and the other search engines.

Getting indexed is all about the search engines noticing the new site. The search engines “crawl the Internet” and in their crawls they can easily detect new websites.

Also, you don’t have to wait to get indexed, and I for one recommend that you don’t. Some Internet marketers who make websites think that it is somehow better to let Google discover your site on their own, I disagree. You can help them along by getting some key links from sites are crawled frequently which is the best way to get Google to discover a new site and quickly.

Best sites for links for quick Indexing

Ezine ArticlesNothing gets you noticed faster than a link from Ezine Articles. Write an article and link back to your site in the resource box, Google crawls them constantly and your site will get noticed quickly!

Mixx – Social networking site, where you can submit some content pages

Jump Tags – Another very popular site with Google that gets crawled frequently and where you can get a link to get your site noticed very quickly.

Launch Feed – Submit your home page and get a do-follow link and noticed by the search engines.

Sitemaps and Indexing

Another important action in order to get your site noticed by Google and especially to show Google all the pages in your site is by using Google Webmaster Tools. Submit your sitemap to Google and that is the best way to get Google to notice all the pages your site has to offer and increase the probability of those pages getting indexed, which of course leads to a lot more traffic potential. You can also submit your sites to Bing, which will have the same affect.

But, not all new sites will get indexed.

Why Not all Sites Get Indexed

Not all sites will get indexed, and mainly that is because the sites structure is flawed in some way, there are errors on the page, or there may be issues which are against Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, like keyword stuffing, or other blackhat issues. Learn more here: Google Friendly Sites.

Ranking versus Indexing

There is a big difference between ranking and indexing. A site can be indexed butnot ranking, while a ranking site is always indexed.

Ranking means that the site sits high in the index, or in the SERPS, search engine page results.

Once a site is indexed, it is then the job of the webmaster to promote the site using SEO (search engine optimization) techniques, which are mostly link building efforts to get it to rank, with the end goal always being page 1 of the SERPS for the relevant keywords.

You can also get indexed by submitting your sitemap to google in webmaster tools

Didn’t know about jumptags may use them as mixx now uses nofollow on links.

Yes JumpTags work everytime for me, but so does Mixx, even though Google says they don’t follow no follow links, I still get results.
